In November 1970, a private limited company named ‘Maruti Technical Services Private Limited’ (MTSPL) was launched in India to provide technical know-how for the design, manufacture, and assembly of “a wholly indigenous motor car”. In June 1971, a company called ‘Maruti Limited’ was incorporated under the Companies Act and Sanjay Gandhi became its first managing director. But in 1977, ‘Maruti Limited’ went into liquidation after a series of scandals. After the death of Sanjay Gandhi in June 1980, the Government of India (GoI) thought of reviving Maruti Limited and started looking for an active collaborator for the new company.
